About Snoring

What causes snoring?

During normal sleep the muscles that control the tongue and soft palate hold the airway open. These muscles relax during sleep. The tissues of the upper airway vibrate as air passes over them, creating a snoring noise.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)?

If the muscles are too weak to hold the tongue and muscles in position, the airway may become obstructed and dangerous respiratory arrests may occur.

Undiagnosed sleep apnea can be life threatening. If you think you may be suffering from sleep apnea, seek the advice of a medical professional.

If I snore do I have OSA?

Although a professionally conducted sleep study is the only way to fully diagnose OSA, frequent loud snoring may be a sign of sleep apnea, a common and potentially serious disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts as you sleep.

Not everyone who snores has sleep apnea, and not everyone who has sleep apnea snores. The biggest indication is how you feel during the day. Normal snoring can interfere with the quality of your sleep but not as much as apnea does, so you’re less likely to suffer from extreme fatigue and sleepiness during the day if you have simple snoring as opposed to OSA.

However, snoring can be more than just annoying – it can be a danger to your health. If you think you may suffer from OSA we recommend that you seek the advice and treatment of a sleep specialist.

How does a Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) work?

Your Sleep Guardian anti-snoring device, which is a Silensor-sl® design, treats snoring by advancing the lower jaw, which keeps the airways open. The appliance is custom made to measure for you and consists of an upper blue and a lower green splint.

Is the Silensor-sl® The Sleep Guardian's invention?

No, the Silensor-sl® anti-snoring device is a trademark of ERKODENT®, a German dental technology company. The Silensor-sl® has a long and successful track record in treating snoring and is our preferred MAD design due to comfort, wearer compliance, and the lack of metals, methyl methacrylate, and acrylic in the design.

Are there any side effects?

Because most anti-snoring devices hold your lower jaw in a forward position, some people feel discomfort initially, but this tends to get better with prolonged use. Mostly, any discomfort is in the joint at the back of your jaw, just in front of the ear. This should soon go away when you remove the appliance in the morning.

Other people find that it causes saliva to build up in the mouth, or makes the teeth feel tender. Again, these symptoms settle quickly with continuing use. Over the long term, there may be tooth movement, changes in your bite, or problems with the joint and muscles of the jaw. We recommend regular use of the Bite-Tab supplied with your anti-snoring device, or The Sleep Guardian AM Repositioner to help return the lower jaw back to its pre-snoring device position and reduce the likelihood of long-term side effects.

And, of course we always strongly recommend regular check-ups with a dentist or specialist.

Do your devices contain latex or BPA?

No, our anti-snoring devices do not contain latex or BPA. Nor do they contain methyl methacrylate.

What is the AM Repositioner?

Regular usage of oral sleep devices may lead to an increased incidence of forward posturing of the lower jaw and may lead to an advanced occlusion over time. Therefore, it is recommended that you perform some isometric contraction of the muscles regularly.

The AM Repositioner is a bite deprogrammer designed to help return your lower jaw to its normal position. The design of the AM Repositioner has raised blocks of material, placed directly above the bicuspids - directing all clenching forces straight down towards the roots. When the exercise is performed correctly, you will benefit from isometric contraction of the muscles.

For more information on how to use the AM Repositioner, check out our how to use document.

Does the Sleep Guardian work with braces or a fixed plate?

The Home Impression Kit is not suitable for use if you have fixed appliances or braces. Removable appliances must be taken out prior to taking your impression.

Is the impression process difficult?

Not at all. By watching the How To Take Your Impression video a few times, you’ll know all the steps to getting your impression right the first time.

Once you have taken your impression, we recommend emailing a photo to info@thesleepguardian.com.au so we can have one of our technicians assess your impression. If it’s not suitable, we will send you, at no cost, more supplies to try again until you get it perfect.

How long will it take to receive my device?

All our deliveries are then made via Australia Post. Once you place an order please allow 7 - 14 days for regular shipping, and for express shipping, allow 2 to 4 business days. Once we receive your impression at our lab, allow 10 - 15 working days for construction before posting back to you.

Once we receive your finished impression, it will take up to 10 working days to manufacture.

What the best way to insert my device?

First, run the appliance under warm running water.

Place the appliance into your mouth with the blue upper splint onto your upper teeth. Press upwards on the splint with both thumbs to ensure that it fits securely and comfortably.

To seat the lower splint, slide your lower jaw forward until it locates into the green lower splint then press down on both sides of the splint using your index fingers to ensure that it fits securely.

To remove, always remove the lower green splint first.

Using your thumbs on both sides under the edge of the splint, gently push the lower splint up and remove it.

To remove the upper blue upper splint, gently pull down with both your index fingers and thumbs and remove it.

How will I know if my MAD is working?

Usually a bed partner will be a good indication as to whether your snoring has dissipated.

If you sleep alone, there are good smartphone apps online which will record your snoring episodes. Also, if it is working you will probably have more energy during the day from a more restful sleep.

What if the device doesn’t stop my snoring?

If after a week of wearing your Sleep Guardian oral appliance you are still experiencing episodes of snoring, your device may need to be adjusted or titrated to bring your lower jaw further forward.

In this case, please contact The Sleep Guardian, then you will need to arrange to post it back to us for your device to be adjusted back at our lab and then returned to you.

What is the best way to care for my MAD?

In the morning after removing the appliance, rinse it under lukewarm running water and clean it thoroughly with a toothbrush everyday. Please be very careful using a toothbrush, as your device is delicate and heavy scrubbing could damage it and void your warranty.

After cleaning the appliance dry it, and store in the container provided. Keep the appliance and container away from direct sunlight.

Toothpaste may damage your oral sleep appliance.

Never use hot or boiling water!

Hot or boiling water damages your Sleep Guardian oral sleep appliance and this will invalidate the warranty.

What if my device breaks?

Damaged or broken devices must not be used. Continuing use may cause injury.

Contact The Sleep Guardian immediately and we will arrange for your oral sleep appliance to be repaired by an expert.

What if I don't stop snoring and I need my device adjusted?

Easy. Send us an email and arrange for your device to be sent back to our lab for adjusting, then we'll send it back. All for no extra cost.

Can I claim private health insurance for my snoring device?

Not if you purchase directly through The Sleep Guardian. We have priced our product in a way to ensure you're paying an affordable price whether you have private health insurance or not. In fact, you may pay more for this kind of snoring device as a gap on private health than our full price.
